Public Hearing debates construction of thermoelectric plant in Santana – News of Brazil

The Government of Amapá held a public hearing on Wednesday, 21st, to share with the population information about the prior license required to attest to the environmental viability of the construction project for the Rio Matapi II Thermoelectric Power Plant, in the Industrial District of Santana. The State Secretariat for the Environment (Sema) is evaluating the project, which provides for a structure supplied with natural gas, a less polluting fuel, and capacity to generate 600 Megawatts (MW).
At the hearing, the stages of environmental licensing, the characteristics of the enterprise and the Environmental Impact Study (EIA) produced by the company CLRJ, responsible for the project, were presented. The document brings together technical, scientific and administrative information to support the assessment of environmental impacts resulting from polluting activities or that may cause degradation to the environment.
To conduct this process, Sema formed a Working Group (GT) composed of technicians from the department. The team will be responsible for a careful assessment of the licensing request made by CLRJ. The folder’s manager, Taisa Mendonça, highlighted that the public hearing provides clarification to the community.
“It is also the moment when Sema will analyze what the company is proposing for the installation of the enterprise in our state”, added Taisa.
The action provided people from Santa Catarina with an opportunity to get to know the project, make suggestions and forward proposals that will be evaluated by Sema’s technical team. Resident Sidiane Ribeiro believes that the construction will generate jobs in the city, which is the second most populous in the state, on the other hand, she understands the need to care for the environment.
“It is important that people from Santa Catarina can benefit, but I am concerned about the pollution that can be generated and the precautions that the company takes to minimize this loss”, concluded.
The contributions of the population will be duly analyzed, taking into account the environmental and social aspects involved in the project.
The project
Construction of the plant requires an estimated investment of BRL 2 billion, with a structure that would be fueled by natural gas, a fuel option with less environmental impact compared to other alternatives. The proposal seeks to provide energy through the use of a modern technology known as the Combined Cycle, combining gas and steam turbines.
“Energy generation will take place through liquid gas that will be transformed into gaseous, being burned in the gas turbine to drive the generator”, explained the company’s business manager, Christian Celeste.
Among the benefits highlighted for Amapá, the company emphasized the guarantee of energy security, with the capacity to supply a large part of the state’s demand, in addition to creating 100 direct and 600 indirect jobs. The director of CLRJ, Marco Antônio Marcial, explained that the company operates in Amazonas, Maranhão, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro and Bahia and that it is looking for new possibilities to participate and expand its energy generation capacity.
“We noticed the need to hold an auction to promote more energy with natural gas, with a significant amount for the North region, so the company identified the need and developed the project, with the technical and financial capacity to execute it”, Martial concluded.
The holding of the public hearing represents a step in the licensing process, which the interested company undergoes. For the mayor of Santana, Sebastião Bala, the project brings improvements in several aspects for Santana society.
“This is very important for Amapá, it generates jobs and income, improves the collection of the municipality, so that is why we are supporting it”, said Bala.
