PT requests TV and radio channel from the Ministry of Communications – 06/06/2023 – Panel

The PT sent a request to the Ministry of Communications this Tuesday (6) to be entitled to its own TV and radio channels.
In the request, signed by the president of the party, Gleisi Hoffmann, and by the secretary of Communication, Jilmar Tatto, the caption requests that it be allocated concessions that are vacant, that is, already existing, but not currently used.
If the ministry meets the request, the PT will be the first Brazilian party to have its own radio and TV channels.
The party argues, in a letter sent to the Minister of Communications, Juscelino Filho, that the main reasons for making the request are to increase the accountability of its activities to the population and help in the dissemination of political participation.
“A communication channel belonging to the Workers’ Party would enable the fulfillment of a constitutional, legal and statutory duty, providing opportunities for political participation beyond the simple act of voting, adopting a true pedagogy of party-political participation”, he justifies in the request .
The request lists 49 channels in several states that are currently vacant and could be made available by the ministry.
Concessions of radio and TV channels are acts of the Presidency of the Republic, according to the Constitution, through a series of criteria, such as the publication of a notice and having 70% of the capital in the hands of Brazilians.
The PT argues that there is nothing in the legislation that prevents a political party from applying for a channel. “It is observed that the concession of radio/TV telecommunications services to political parties does not find express legislative obstacle”, he says.
The PT already has an expressive communication structure based on digital media, which has grown in recent years, in addition to having the right to advertise on TV, according to the law. The party says, however, that these means are insufficient.
“Communication through a specific party channel would enable fair provision of information, since political parties are inseparably linked to political education, encouraging political participation and continuous communication with citizens”, he says.
The ministry says it has received the party’s request, but has not commented on the request or deadlines.
