PT partnership with centrão does not include electoral disputes – 07/10/2023 – Dora Kramer

President Luiz Inácio da Silva is in a serious relationship with Congress. Minister Alexandre Padilha (Institutional Relations) announced this when he announced that the government would be “open” to discussing the inclusion of parties such as the PL, PP and Republicans in the structure of the Esplanada.

In pure political terms, this means that there will be ministerial reform to bring the opposition into line. Nothing too radical. Surgical relocations will be carried out, so as not to affect allies of the “front” nor to completely displease the PT, which will have to give up some spaces.

In a conversation a few days ago, Padilha said that such a reform would bring political articulation to the state of the art. “My life is going to improve a lot”, vented the minister. Such optimism, however, requires calibration.

For the following: the partnership with oppositionists to run the government for four years does not imply that they are mixed up in the mid-term electoral disputes.

Partners in the so-called governance are not necessarily companions on platforms. This direct relationship does not even exist in the field of the left, much less will it exist now that the right has objective conditions of competitiveness.

In Lula’s first administrations, the root center was with him, including in the elections. The scenario is now different. Although it is useful for the president to divide the opposing parties and they are interested in the adhesion of results, the partnership has an expiration date.

In fact, two deadlines. The first, in the municipal election, when federal deputies are engaged in the election of mayors and councilors who will be reinforced in the re-election campaigns two years later. Here, the right’s plan is to beat the PT in all capitals.

The second and definitive deadline, in 2026, will mark the last year of Lula’s current term, which will face heavy opposition from the current partners.
