PT may leave aside taxation of millionaires to pass reforms in the Chamber

The leader of the PT in the Chamber of Deputies, Zeca Dirceu (PR), said this Tuesday (8) that the party’s bench can “give up”, at the moment, to increase the taxation of millionaires in the second phase of the tax reform in exchange for manage to pass the economic measures forwarded in the first semester.

The projects that have already passed through the Chamber and/or the Senate are considered a priority by the government to reinforce tax collection and reduce the gap in public accounts expected for this year and to get the deficit to zero in 2024. On the agenda are the new fiscal framework , the tax reform focused on consumption and other initiatives, including changes in the Administrative Board of Tax Appeals (Carf).

The Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, had a meeting in the morning with deputies from the PT base, in Brasília. The party caucus is pushing for the income-focused second phase of tax reform to implement higher taxes for the rich and super-rich. However, this second phase will be presented to Congress after the approval of the reform on consumption.

“The bank talked a lot [no encontro com Haddad], we even give up, now, taxing millionaires. Which is not enough for a country with so much inequality not to tax even billionaires. There will be measures in this sense, first we will win the tax reform, the tax regime, Carf. The Chamber will fulfill its role”, he told the newspaper. The globe.

According to Dirceu, the bench is aligned with Haddad, who would have reiterated the need for support for the approval of the 2024 budget that will be sent to Congress by the 31st. “In the first semester we had a short circuit or another, but the bench is 100% tuned [com Haddad]”, added the deputy.

To boost revenue in the coming years, the Ministry of Finance depends on the approval of several measures by Congress. One of these measures is the bill aimed at taxing exclusive investment funds aimed at high incomes, which currently only pay income tax upon redemption, without half-yearly payments like other funds.

The caucus pledged to guarantee the advancement of these initiatives after the conclusion of the priority reforms.
