The survey compared the structural characteristics of the business segment of commerce activity

Manaus (AM) – Amazonas recorded a reduction of 5,400 people employed in the commerce sector, between 2012 and 2021. The data are contained in the Annual Survey of Commerce (PAC), released last Friday (4th) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

The survey compared the structural characteristics of the business segment of commerce activity, over a period of 10 years. According to the study, in 2021 the sector occupied a total of 94,313 people in Amazonas. In 2012, there were 88,860 people.

The survey evaluates the three main segments: sale of vehicles, parts and motorcycles; wholesale trade; and retail trade. According to IBGE data, there was a decrease of 11.43% in the number of local units with revenue from resale by commercial companies in the State. The total number of local units increased from 10.5 thousand in 2012 to 9.3 thousand in 2021.

There was also a loss of 579 units in the retail trade and two units in the trade of vehicles, parts and motorcycles. Wholesale trade also showed a loss of 112 units.

According to the study, in 2021 the average monthly salary perceived by workers in each activity division dropped to 1.7 minimum wages. Compared to 2012, there was a drop in the average salary received in the wholesale trade and in vehicles, parts and motorcycles, with a reduction of 2.4 and 2.5, respectively, to 2.1 minimum wages in 2021. The average salary in retail trade it remained constant (1.5 minimum wages).

Within this situation, economist Aurélio Trancoso points out that, given the results, it is possible to note that the best wages in the country in relation to the sector are concentrated in the South and Southeast regions, which, in turn, are also the regions that employed the most people until 2021.

“There was a small increase, but it was there. Afterwards, the Midwest, with an increase practically equal to that of Brazil, accompanied the Brazilian increase. And you have the North and Northeast with the lowest increases in terms of salary. When you talk about busy people, the South and Southeast regions are the ones that employ the most and are also the ones that give the best wages”,

comment.

Despite the reductions, the gross revenue of Amazonas in 2021 doubled in value, compared to the year 2012, registering R$ 61 billion. Of the total, R$ 25.3 billion (41.5%) were generated in retail trade; R$ 30.7 billion (50.2%) in wholesale trade; and R$ 5 billion (8.2%) in the sale of vehicles, parts and motorcycles.

Economist Luigi Mauri notes that, despite the relative improvement that has taken place in trade, there has not been a full recovery with respect to the period before the pandemic. Still according to the expert, there have been changes in the consumption behavior of Brazilians.

“Until 2021, we can clearly see that the consumer has a preference for online sales, that is, physical sales in commerce have decreased and online sales have grown. It is still not the predominance, but they had a good highlight in this period until 2021. This may point to a trend for the coming years of consumers preferring to buy from the comfort of their home, online, instead of going to the physical store”,

explains.

Annual Trade Survey

The IBGE has carried out the Annual Survey of Commerce since 1996. According to the institute, the information portrayed in the PAC is essential for the analysis and economic planning of private sector companies and different levels of government.
