PT is committed to protecting the MST at the CPI, says Gleisi – 03/05/2023 – Panel

National PT president, federal deputy Gleisi Hoffmann (PR) says the party will make an effort to defend the MST (Movement of Landless Rural Workers) in the CPI (Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry) that will be installed in Congress with the organization as a target.

MST leaders have expressed fears that the movement will be helpless in the face of the attention that the CPI has focused on investigating the January 8 coup attacks. After the so-called Red April invasions, the MST received criticism from several ministers, such as Carlos Fávaro (Agriculture), Alexandre Padilha (Institutional Relations) and Paulo Teixeira (Agrarian Development).

“We are committed, yes, to protecting the MST. I’ve already talked to Zeca [Dirceu, líder do partido na Câmara]with [José] guimaraes [líder do governo na Câmara] and other deputies. This CPI is an attempt to criminalize the movement. This has happened before. We are not going to let that happen”, says Gleisi to the Panel.

The movement has already been the target of four CPIs in Congress, the first being the CPMI da Terra, which operated between 2003 and 2005 and suggested, in its final report, that a bill be approved that typifies land invasion as a heinous crime and act terrorist.

“The MST is very important for popular and social movements. It is the largest organized movement in Brazil and contributes a lot to our development, with its cooperatives, organic production, peasant agriculture. In addition, it practices immense solidarity with other movements and with the poorest population in Brazil. In the pandemic, they distributed tons and tons of food in the Brazilian peripheries”, completes the president of the PT.

Former government minister Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and current federal deputy Ricardo Salles (PL-SP) is the favorite to assume the commission’s rapporteurship. Deputy Lieutenant Colonel Zucco (Republicanos-RS), author of the CPI request, should chair the collegiate.

Report by Sheet showed that the opposition considers that the MST’s CPI could generate more wear and tear on the Lula government than the one on January 8th.
