The PT will not be able to meet its goal of reaching its electoral conference, scheduled for December 8th and 9th in Brasília, with practically all of its candidacies for mayors defined, at least in the capitals and main cities.
“There is a good portion that will remain for next year, places where there is still no consensus on the electoral strategy”, says senator Humberto Costa (PE), coordinator of the party’s Electoral Working Group.
There are still internal disputes in cities like Salvador and Fortaleza, where more than one pre-candidate is presenting itself. In places like São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Recife, the question is the name of the vice-president to be offered to other parties’ running mates.
A complicating factor was the PT’s decision to create a rule that makes it difficult to hold preliminary elections, giving greater power to municipal directorates to decide a candidate. This has generated reactions in several places regarding deprecated names.
Even with so much uncertainty, Costa says that the meeting will be important to unify the party’s message and reinforce the ideas that it is necessary to defend the Lula government and that the 2024 elections are the precursor to 2026.
