PSOL meeting has fight between militants – 10/01/2023 – Power

The PSOL national congress ended this Sunday (1st), marked by fights between activists, and with a victory for the wing of the party linked to deputy Guilherme Boulos (SP), who defends rapprochement with the Lula government (PT).

The event took place in a hotel in Brasília and before the election to define the presidency of the party took place, opposing groups provoked each other until confusion began.

Militants got on stage, there was pushing and shoving and a man appears trying to throw a punch. A person with a microphone in hand asked them to “immediately” get off the stage.

In a statement, the president of PSOL, Juliano Medeiros, regretted what happened and stated that he had opened an investigation into the case.

“During the 8th PSOL National Congress there was a disagreement between two activists that ended up intensifying tempers and interrupting the progress of the Congress for a few moments.”

“The PSOL management regrets what happened. The case is under investigation by the responsible bodies. The incident did not change the course of the meeting, which ended with electing the new management and approving all the planned resolutions”, informed Medeiros.

The party president will be replaced by Paula Coradi, elected this Sunday with 67% of the votes of 451 delegates, who will lead PSOL until 2026.

Paula is from the Socialist Spring movement, which together with Solidarity Revolution, led by deputy Guilherme Boulos, pre-candidate for mayor of São Paulo, forms the PSOL Popular camp, the majority in the party. The group defends that the party is the basis of the Lula government and that it does not isolate itself from other parties.

The winner defeated the group led by Sâmia Bonfim, from the movement (Movimento Esquerda Socialista), which defends the party’s position of independence. Members of this wing accused members of the other group of carrying out regimental maneuvers to try to reduce the space of the minority current in the party.

According to people linked to Boulos, the confusion at the national congress arose precisely because of discussions about the size of each wing.

The group linked to Sâmia left the meeting smaller, which means that the current should have less space in the party leadership.
