PSDB must offer balance, says São Paulo president – 10/24/2023 – Panel

Former municipal secretary of the Civil House, Tourism and Housing, Orlando Faria became president of the PSDB municipal directory at the beginning of October in the midst of yet another of the turbulent processes that mark the party’s recent history.

Fernando Alfredo, his predecessor, organized a convention in September despite the PSDB leadership and a court order and was re-elected. The party argued that Alfredo’s management would be retaliating against opponents and favoring allies and, therefore, the vote could be flawed and warned that he should not hold it.

Eduardo Leite (RS), president of the party, then ignored the unauthorized convention and chose Faria for the position of president of a provisional committee to run the directory until a new convention is made.

Marco Vinholi, president of the São Paulo directory, will also lose his position for having validated the municipal convention considered irregular.

In the midst of this turmoil, Faria states that the formula for overcoming trauma will involve internal conversations with councilors and historical leaders and a programmatic discussion about what the party can offer to São Paulo. The new municipal president intends to hold PSDB seminars to discuss city issues.

The exchange of Alfredo for Faria was a defeat for Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB), whose allies tried to prevent the choice of the former secretary.

This is because the removed president had already committed to supporting the emedebista in his quest for re-election in 2024.

Furthermore, Faria has already made harsh public criticisms of the current mayor for allegedly abandoning premises of the political project he built together with Bruno Covas (PSDB).

“What we have today is a formal defense by the PSDB bench of councilors in support of Nunes. I made a commitment to take this to the party’s National Executive. There is also a party resolution to launch its own candidate in cities with more than 100 thousand inhabitants. We need to see if someone has the willingness and viability to launch”, says Faria, highlighting that the electoral discussion is early and should only be intensified next year.

Regarding the possibility of supporting Tabata Amaral (PSB), who could offer the position of vice-president on the ticket to a PSDB nominee, Faria states that smaller groups in the party defend this alternative, but that the focus is to reorganize the party in the capital and try to least maintain the size of the municipal bench, with eight seats in the City Council.

The PSDB’s priority, says Faria, is to structure a government program that represents the party. If the party decides to launch its own candidate, it must upload this proposal. If the idea is to support a name, it will have to make a programmatic commitment, not a physiological one, with the São Paulo tucanato.

“The PSDB has to stand out from the rest by proposing balance. Avoid radicalism within public policies and try to balance them. Bring social guarantees to those who need it most, but without harming management’s finances, breaking the bank, spending more than that it collects”, he concludes.
