The presidents of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), and of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG) gave a hard and final message to the government during a press conference given earlier this Wednesday afternoon (23), reaffirming Congress’ role in the imminent approval of the fiscal framework, followed by the tax reform, and burying the government’s economic intervention agenda.

The joint demonstration was the first demonstration of partnership between the two presidents of Congress, after the series of disagreements that marked the first months of the legislature and the indication of a direction for the political articulation of the Planalto. For analysts, the gesture was aimed at strengthening the voting agenda in view of the fragility of the government’s coordination.

In a statement after a meeting held at the official residence of the President of the Senate, Lira and Pacheco warned that the plenary sessions of Parliament will not discuss the autonomy of the Central Bank (BC), the Sanitation Framework and the privatization of Eletrobras, approved in the last government. “So many new projects will be conquests that will come, but also the maintenance of a recent reality in Brazil with important votes that Congress made and realities that became effective in Brazil, which are issues that we are already facing”, said Pacheco.

Alongside the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad; BC president Roberto Campos Neto; and the rapporteurs of the new fiscal framework and the tax reform, they set the tone for the most urgent and consensual agenda for this semester. The parliamentarians made the announcement after the meeting with representatives of the productive sector, who came to show support for the approval of the two agendas prioritized by Congress. He hopes there will be speed in the approval of the two matters.

The president of the Senate made a point of underlining the reformist profile of the two legislative houses at the time and preached harmony between them, with dialogue with the other powers. “I hope that, from this meeting, we can create an environment of great responsibility with the reforms that we need to carry out in Brazil”, he said.
