Project takes black entrepreneurs to Silicon Valley – 02/13/2023 – New in Folha

The “From Silence to Silicon” project, which will take ten young black Brazilian entrepreneurs to California to get to know the main technology companies in Silicon Valley, is open for registration.

The initiative comes from a partnership between Danielle Marques, diversity and inclusion analyst, and StartSe, a reference digital platform that connects the startup market in Brazil.

Entries go until February 20th and must be made on the project page. Those interested must fill out the form and attach a presentation video of no more than two minutes.

The project will select young people with already validated, active and technologically based projects in any segment. It is necessary to master English, but a daily 30-minute course will be given to those who cannot yet speak the language.

Those chosen will participate in workshops and learn about market trends, in addition to having the opportunity to network with American executives. They will also receive a certificate from StartSe University, located in Palo Alto.

Upon returning from the United States, participants must offer mentorship to a peripheral entrepreneur in return for the scholarship received.

Marques, who created the program, is black and grew up on the outskirts of Ribeirão Preto, in the interior of São Paulo. According to her, the idea came after going to Silicon Valley through a scholarship offered to black women by StartSe itself and realizing the lack of representation in the large technology companies in the region.

The name “From Silence to Silicon” comes from what activist Monique Evelle calls the “Valley of Silence” —the peripheral areas where the black population is ignored in technology areas, which does not mean, however, that there is no innovation there .
