Project offers free exams for residents of Manacapuru this Tuesday (25)

Manacapuru (AM) – The gen-t project in Brazil will offer several free laboratory tests to 100 people, this Tuesday (25), from 6:00 am to 11:00 am, in Manacapuru (98 kilometers from Manaus). Among the services offered are complete blood counts, cholesterol assessment, tests for diabetes, blood pressure measurement, heart rate mapping and analysis of Body Mass Index (BMI) and waist circumference.

The project will work at UBS Santo Antônio, located at Rua José Afonso, 259-385, in the Terra Preta district, in Manacapuru. To participate, you must be Brazilian, be 18 years old or older, present a document with a photo (such as RG or CNH, for example), make an appointment through the website and donate a blood sample on the day of the action.

After this activity, the gen-t team will return to Manacapuru annually, for five years, to redo the tests on the volunteers who participated in the project and send new health reports.

Brazil’s gen-t project is building a gene bank to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases in the Brazilian population. The initiative has already passed through São Paulo and Minas Gerais, and is now arriving in Manacapuru. The articulations of the initiative in Amazonas and the organization of the pilot collection in Manacapuru are being coordinated by Benevolência Consultoria.

How it works

When accessing the scheduling link, the participant selects the day and time he wants to have the blood collected, and provides his name, e-mail and contact telephone number. Afterwards, it is necessary to read the Term of Consent and, if you agree, sign the pages and answer a questionnaire about your health and lifestyle habits.

Upon arrival at the laboratory on the scheduled day, a member of the gen-t team will perform a clinical examination on the volunteer, measuring blood pressure, heart rate and temperature, in addition to checking weight, height and waist circumference.

Then, a blood sample will be collected for laboratory tests and DNA to be obtained. After the analysis, within four days, the participant will receive the test results by email and SMS.

Part of the sample is destined for a partner laboratory to carry out laboratory tests, the results of which will be delivered to the 100 participants in a few days. The other part is sent to the gen-t laboratory, where it undergoes a rigorous verification process and receives an identification code.

Thus, personal information becomes anonymous, ensuring the privacy of volunteers. Then DNA is extracted from the rest of the blood and is ready for genetic sequencing.

Currently, 80% of the genetic material used for research in the world comes from white populations and of European origin, limiting the potential for discoveries and the effectiveness of some therapies for other populations. Brazil has great potential to change this scenario, since our people are made up of a mixture of different ethnicities.

In addition to promoting genomic science in the world, the project aims to improve precision medicine for Brazilians, as it will be a genetic sample of our population.
