Project includes presentations of the show “Seeing the Invisible”, which brings a unique approach to contemporary clowning

This week, the city of Manaus hosts “Circulation Seeing the Invisible”, a season that highlights cultural accessibility. The project, contemplated by the Thiago de Mello 2023 Law and Notice, includes presentations of the show “Seeing the Invisible”, which brings a unique approach to contemporary clowning, as well as sensory theater workshops aimed at children and young people from specific education schools, most of them have visual impairments, whether blindness or low vision.

In addition to offering audio description for the show, the team thought about providing meaningful sensory experiences that go beyond meeting quotas. The audio description is carefully prepared, preserving the subjectivity of the theatrical experience, becoming a tool for understanding theater by audiences with disabilities.

“Seeing the Invisible” began in 2020 as an artistic residency, since then it has had more than 15 presentations in Amazonas and in places outside the state. Now, with circulation, the project seeks to explore ways of mediating and encouraging theater support for spectators with disabilities. The objective is to go beyond integration, seeking active and genuine inclusion, where sensory experiences are a counterpart to the understanding of theater, allowing everyone to have access to art.

“It is necessary to understand the specific demands of people with disabilities, without generalizing and removing the subjectivity of those who watch the show.” This is Ananda Guimarães, actress, clown, director, teacher and researcher of Def Methodology, is a reference in the artistic scene of the North and Amazonas when it comes to accessibility and intersectionality, an active voice in the emancipation of people with disabilities in the cultural sphere.
