Program encourages science in public school students in Manaus

The objective of the program is to bring students from the state network closer to the scientific environment of the university.

Manaus (AM) – With the aim of encouraging science among young people, students from the State School (EE) Professora Myrthes Marques Trigueiro, in the East Zone of Manaus, visited two science laboratories at the Institute of Biological Sciences (ICB), at the Federal University of Amazonas (Ufam) .

Accompanied by professors, the students visited the Human Anatomy and Embryology laboratory, where they attended different classes on the functioning of the human body and other biological practices.

The Pedagogical Residency program is part of a partnership between the State Department of Education and Sports and Ufam, with the aim of bringing students from the state network closer to the university’s scientific environment. In addition to promoting interaction between students of the Biological Sciences course, who are finishing their graduation and are already preparing for teaching.

Student Guilherme Aguiar, 12 years old, who is attending the 7th year of Elementary School, participated in the activity that took place on Friday (27th), and described the visit to the laboratories, stating that now he has a new career in mind, of scientist.

“This experience was really cool, they explained a lot to us. I had never participated in such visits before. I liked it a lot, I wanted to be a police officer, but now I’m in doubt”, said the young man.

Professor Arthur Castro, who teaches Science for students from 6th to 9th grade at Myrthes Trigueiro State School, is in charge of the project and explained the importance of the partnership between school and university.

“In the anatomy laboratory, students are able to see in practice how the organs work and what the functions are. This experience, they would hardly be able to have in school. So, this partnership with the university and the state school makes this learning happen in a significant way”, pointed out the professor.

Beatriz Araújo, resident student, finalist in the Natural Sciences course at Ufam, spoke of the difference between teaching the discipline in the classroom and practical experience.

“Leaving the abstract and bringing concretely what you are teaching in the classroom makes the student’s creativity go further and also helps in cognitive development, to understand what a lung is, what a heart is, what not it’s like in the drawings”, added Beatriz.
