Professionals tell their stories and celebrate National Pharmacist Day

For millennia, pharmacy has been part of human history. But the profession was immortalized in the figure of the apothecary or apothecary who appeared in the convents of France and Spain, playing the role of doctor and pharmacist and being considered an expert in knowing the limits between medicine and poison. In Brazil, apothecaries (pharmacies of the time) arrived together with the Jesuits and this type of commerce intensified when the Royal Family arrived in Brazil, thus creating the first schools for pharmacists graduated in 1900.

Historical research aside, today, Saturday, January 20th, National Pharmacist Day is celebrated, a professional whose profession has been regulated in Brazil as a professional activity under the jurisdiction of the Federal Pharmacy Council, which regulates its practice, based on the Law 3,820, since its signature on November 11, 1960, by President Juscelino Kubitschek, according to data from the CFF.

To honor these professionals who play an essential role in the well-being of health and the local population, we invited some representatives of the category to tell their stories and experiences and their love for the profession, showing why they are considered pharmacists with attitude.

Former president of the Amazonas Regional Pharmacy Council (CRF-AM), pharmacist Ednilza Guedes Specialist in Hospital Administration and Health Services and Clinical Cytology and who served two consecutive terms from 2014 to 2017, as president of the body, currently works in pharmacy FCECON satellite that presents a new routine medicine distribution system that meets the needs of the sector.

In addition, Hemoam also carries out specialized exams and reviews Onco hematological slides, as well as performing the same service to detect other hematological diseases since 2022 at the institution. Ednilza was also recruited as a pharmacist by the State Department of Health of Amazonas (SES-AM), in partnership with the Ministry of Health to combat the COVID pandemic, working at the Cecon Surgical Center since 2021 to date.

For Ednilza, pharmacy is a health profession with a constant and diverse study routine in various areas of activity that seeks cures for numerous illnesses, treatment and prevention.

“Today, pharmaceutical professionals have a combination of 10 lines of activity and 135 specialties and an important role in healthcare. Without realizing it, my story started young, caring for people who came from the interior of Amazonas and seeking knowledge in natural treatments. Hence the passion for Pharmacy and its guidelines”,

recalls the pharmacist responsible for executing the Farmacêuticos em Ação project developed during the period in which she was in charge of CRF-AM.

The project that consisted of bringing health and pharmaceutical services to the population had repercussions throughout the capital of Amazonas, raising the flag and the importance of the profession.

Born into a family of pharmacists whose grandfather, Dr. Wilson Conde, was the founder of one of the most traditional laboratories in Manaus, São José, pharmacist Carlison Rodrigues Generalist and Specialist in Orthomolecular and Specialist in Clinical Analysis chose the pharmacy course initially to continue the family legacy.

However, halfway through, he discovered Clinical Pharmacy which, combined with performance and sport, made the specialist find his true passion and found the 1st Pharmaceutical Practice in the North and Northeast with an emphasis on Weight Loss and Performance.

“Today I work in the clinical area with an emphasis on weight loss and performance, since overweight and obesity are major public health problems and lead to several underlying diseases such as hypertension, diabetes and even some types of cancer. And we do work to keep people at the peak of their physical health in order to become increasingly healthier and away from these types of comorbidities”,

explains Carlison.

In his opinion, pharmaceutical professionals live by caring for others and pharmacy was the way they found to be able to contribute their knowledge and do something positive for society.

For the pharmacist, Marco Oliveira, partner/executive director of Educac Brasil – Center for Continuing and Postgraduate Education, Pharmacy is a profession with multiple activities, and according to him, it can be said that there are different professions within one due to the numerous skills that the profession performs.

“It was no different with my career, I worked in laboratories, in hospital pharmacy, with consultancies, but it was education that won me over, to the point of opening my own specialization center in the pharmaceutical and laboratory area, I always tell my employees that Our mission is to improve the health of the population through the professionals we train, it is not an easy task”,

According to the pharmacist who has a Master’s degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the Federal University of Amazonas, among other titles, although the task is full of challenges, it is gratifying to see a former student making a difference in their workplace.

“I also carry out this same mission in the public service, being part of the permanent education and humanization nucleus of the 28 de Agosto hospital, the only Pharmacist among my nursing colleagues to be part of the nucleus, always contributing and learning”,

observe.

His story with Pharmacy began with a professions book, where he was enchanted by the possibility of carrying out experiments in laboratories and carrying out tests on people.

“For me, the pharmaceutical profession is my essence in addition to my livelihood and my family. Our profession is now recognized by society and other health professionals”,

concludes.

Pharmacist, esthete and cosmetologist and Master in Production Engineering, specialist in cosmetic nanotechnology and in the development of natural, technological and organic cosmetics, the Ceo of Pharmapele Manaus, Natasha Mayer says that she was passionate about chemistry and cosmetology since her adolescence and at the time she was Guided by her high school chemistry teacher to take the pharmacy entrance exam.

“There was no other way. The more she learned about the profession, the more passionate she became. I specialized in the manufacture of natural cosmetics, personalized herbal treatments and nanotechnology, always with the aim of making personalized, sustainable and effective formulations”,

As a pharmacist working in the compounding area, Natasha develops personalized formulas to meet the specific needs of each patient, ranging from a specific concentration of the medication or adjusting the form of administration to improve the patient’s quality of life.

“Making it easier to treat, as in the case of jelly beans, lollipops or even cosmetics with a different sensory feel. As President of the state’s Magistral Pharmacy Commission recently, I promoted courses and lectures for pharmacists and health professionals, explaining the importance of personalized treatment in all areas of the pharmacist’s activity”,

The pharmacist says that pharmacy professionals are essential for maintaining the health of the population, helping from medication guidance to the manipulation of personalized formulas.

“When the pharmaceutical professional was neglected in the operation of pharmacies and drugstores, the death rate increased by more than 2000%, falling again when the presence of the pharmacist became mandatory in health establishments”,
