Prisoners for coup attacks received public funds and Bolsonarists in the elections – 01/18/2023 – Politics

Bolsonaristas who were arrested in Brasília for alleged participation in the coup attacks on January 8 had electoral campaigns in 2022 irrigated by public funds.

At least 10 of these Bolsonaristas applied for last year’s dispute, with 7 receiving the sum of R$ 180.8 thousand from electoral and party funds. Part of this resource was distributed to prisoners through the candidacies of other politicians, such as the new governor of Santa Catarina, Jorginho Mello (PL).

The Bolsonarist group reached 5,800 votes and no one was elected. Five of them secured alternate vacancies and one candidate resigned during the campaign.

The PL, former president Jair Bolsonaro’s caption, housed five of the Bolsonarists arrested who ran for office in 2022. Patriota, PMN, PRTB, Solidarity and Christian Democracy are the captions of the others.

Current councilor of Bom Jesus (SC), defeated in the contest for state deputy in SC, Odete Correa (PL-SC) raised the highest figure among arrested candidates, R$ 58.9 thousand. She got 564 votes and an alternate seat.

Most of the amount raised by Odete, R$ 35,000, originates from transfers made by the candidacy of former governor and elected federal deputy Daniela Reinehr (PL-SC).

The arrested Bolsonarist also received R$ 13,900 from the campaign of Governor Jorginho Mello (PL-SC), in addition to R$ 10,000 from Valdir Colatto (PL-SC), the new state secretary of Agriculture.

Daniela Reinehr said that “she transferred values, during the electoral campaign, to almost all the women candidates for state deputy for the party”.

The survey was carried out by Sheet from the intersection of data released by Seape (Department of Penitentiary Administration of the Federal District) and the TSE (Superior Electoral Court). In all, 65 Bolsonaristas in prison have stood as candidates in general or municipal elections since 2000, 26 of them on more than one occasion.

Bolsonarist Maria Elena Passos (PL-ES), who became an alternate state deputy, also had part of the campaign supported by other candidates. She received R$6,500 from the candidacy of senator-elect Magno Malta (PL-ES), in addition to R$30,000 from the PL’s national board.

Journalist Adrian Paz (PRTB-MG), defeated candidate for state deputy and arrested in the DF, published photos on social networks in the coup plotter camp in front of the Army headquarters. In December 2022 he displayed posters, in several languages, stating that Brazil had been “stolen”.

Another politician arrested after the coup acts, Stela Maria Atanazio (Christian Democracy-SP) is in the group of 60 Bolsonaristas who leave jail wearing an electronic anklet, by decision of Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the STF (Federal Supreme Court).

Atanazio received around R$13,800 from the party, but managed only 247 votes and was defeated in the race for federal deputy.

Rogério Souza Lima (PL-BA) had the best result among Bolsonaristas who were arrested. With 2,005 votes, he became an alternate state deputy.

At least two Bolsonaristas from the group that applied in 2022 released videos of the moment of the invasion of the headquarters of the three Powers.

Oziel Lara dos Santos (Patriota-SC), who used the name “Fuzileiro Oziel Santos” when he lost the dispute for state deputy, broadcast on social networks the depredation of the Palácio do Planalto.

In the video, he stated that the people were “angry”. “It’s a war scene here. We, reserve soldiers, advance in front. The STF has already been taken”, he added.

Despite calling for a coup and military action against Lula, Oziel said that “most patriots don’t do that”, referring to vandalism in Planalto. He received R$ 10,000 from the party during the election campaign.

Lawyer Thiago Queiroz (PL-MG) celebrated, in videos, the destruction within the National Congress. In 2022 he received R$ 35,000 from the party, but lost the dispute for state deputy.

“Everything was broken, nothing was left. I’ll have to take something as a souvenir,” said the lawyer in a video recorded at the National Congress, released by the website Patos Notícias.

Candidate for federal deputy Gennaro Vela Neto (PL-PR) was also arrested. He received R$ 24,000 from the party, received 640 votes and was elected as an alternate.

Bolsonarist who resigned in the dispute for second alternate senator, Regina Aparecida Silva (PMN-RR) was also arrested in the DF.

The defeated candidate for district deputy Edna Borges Correa (Solidariedade-DF) had only 106 votes. She was arrested on suspicion of participating in coup acts.

The party said it expelled Edna from its ranks.

The PL, on the other hand, said it opened internal processes and will expel members who “provenly” committed violent acts. The other parties of Bolsonaristas arrested did not manifest themselves.
