President of the Spanish Federation apologizes for kissing champion athlete in the final of the Women’s World Cup

In a video published this Monday (21), Rubiales acknowledged that he was wrong and said that the gesture came from a moment of “maximum effusiveness”, without any bad intention or bad faith, but rather spontaneously.
On the podium, Rubiales greeted all the Spanish players, but her approach to Hermoso was different. The selection’s number 10 missed a penalty during the final. Instead of kissing her on the cheek, the president kissed the player on the mouth.
Shortly afterwards, in a live on the internet, Hermoso said he did not like the attitude. Rubiales’ first reactions to the negative repercussion of the gesture were to reject any criticism, stating to Rádio Marca that they would be “idiotic”.
However, as the images spread, important figures in Spanish society began to express their repudiation of the president’s actions. In an interview with RNE radio, Spain’s interim Minister of Culture and Sports, Miquel Iceta, said the gesture was “unacceptable”. The acting minister for Gender Equality of Spain, Irene Montero, took to Twitter (X) to say that “sexual violence, especially of lesser intensity, continues to be made invisible and normalized”. According to the minister, they should be called what they are: sexual violence.
In view of the new dimensions that the case has gained, in a video released by the RFEF, Rubiales said he regretted the episode, which happened on the same day as one of the happiest events in Spanish football. According to him, within the environment of the selection, everything was seen in a natural way, but that in the outside world this caused a lot of agitation. “If anyone is hurt by this, I apologize,” Rubiales said.
In a statement also sent by the federation, Jenni Hermoso minimized what happened: “It was a mutual gesture, totally spontaneous, motivated by the enormous joy of winning a World Cup. The ‘presi’ and I have a great relationship, his behavior with all of us has always been a 10 and this was a natural gesture of affection and gratitude”.
