Initiative seeks to promote the sharing of experiences between healthcare teams

Manaus (AM) – Health professionals from Manaus City Hall will make, this Wednesday (29), a presentation of successful experiences of treatments carried out in the Diabetic Injury Reference Units of the Municipal Health Department (Semsa). Held in reference to World Diabetes Day (November 14), the activity will take place from 8am to 12pm, in the Doutor Deodato de Miranda Leão auditorium, at the Semsa headquarters, on Avenida Maceió, 160, Adrianópolis neighborhood.

With the theme “How to care for diabetic injuries”, the meeting will be attended by managers from districts and health units, as well as nurses and nursing technicians from Semsa’s Diabetic Injury Reference Units. The initiative seeks to promote the sharing of experiences between health teams, based on case studies treated in the basic network, in addition to recognizing the work of professionals in caring for users with diabetes, with the delivery of certificates to representatives of each unit.

The head of the Health Care Center for People with Circulatory Diseases and Diabetes, Nádia Brito, reports that Semsa has maintained a diabetic injury care program since 2020, currently having 20 reference units, distributed across the ministry’s five Health Districts. The work of the teams in these units, she points out, effectively contributes to improving the quality of life of the users served.

“We have cases of patients who were expected to be amputated and sought a health unit, and we managed to recover the injuries. We seek to raise awareness among diabetic users who have an injury to go to a basic unit to receive adequate care for their case,”

says the manager.

Nádia explains that diabetic patients are more likely to develop skin lesions and infections, especially in the lower limbs, due to factors such as poor glycemic control, nerve damage (neuropathy), comorbidities, tobacco use, late diagnosis of diabetes, among others. others.

“Often people only realize the injury is already at an advanced stage. Treatment requires patience, due to the healing process, which is different in the case of diabetics”,

points.

In addition to the dressing, adds the manager, care includes encouraging a balanced diet, lifestyle changes and the use of medication to control diabetes.

Nádia also remembers that these and other precautions will be reinforced by Semsa with the offering of informal self-care courses for diabetics and hypertensive patients. The training was offered this month, in two groups, as a pilot experience, with the proposal to be extended to other units and districts of the municipal network.

Numbers

Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) shows that almost 250 million people around the world suffer from diabetes. The growing number led the entity to classify the disease as an epidemic, with an increase on a global scale.

Each year, more than 7 million people are diagnosed with the chronic condition. In Brazil, the situation is no different, with every 2 and a half minutes a Brazilian discovers that they have diabetes.
