Population grows 6.5% and reaches 203 million inhabitants

The Northeast, where 54.6 million people lived, accounted for 26.9% of the country’s inhabitants. The two regions had the lowest annual growth rate since the 2010 Census: while the population of the Northeast recorded an annual growth rate of 0.24%, that of the Southeast was 0.45%. The Midwest region is the least populated, with 16.3 million inhabitants, or 8.0% of the country’s population.
The IBGE also points out that around 44.8% of Brazilian municipalities had up to 10,000 inhabitants, but only 12.8 million people, or 6.3% of the country’s population, lived in cities of this size. According to the Census, population growth was greater in the interior than in capitals – 66.58% of the new inhabitants were concentrated in regions outside these large urban centers.
The 20 most populous municipalities in the country concentrated 22.1% of the total population and 17 of them are capital cities. The others were Guarulhos and Campinas, in São Paulo, and São Gonçalo, in Rio de Janeiro. The capital of São Paulo appears in first place in the ranking, with 11.5 million inhabitants, followed by Rio de Janeiro (6.2 million) and Brasília (2.8 million).
