New Zealand and Norway kick off this Thursday (20), at 4 am (Brasília time), the 2023 Women’s Soccer World Cup. edition.

Four years ago, in France, more than 1 billion people watched at least one minute of the matches, on TV or the internet, according to Fifa; the number represents a 30% increase compared to the 2015 World Cup.

Since then, women’s football has recorded attendance records — the 87,000 fans in the Euro 2022 final surpass the marks of the men’s editions — and has advanced in other claims. The US federation, for example, decided to grant female athletes the same prize paid to men; but the measure is still an exception.

In the case of Brazil, one of the main advances was having more organized tournaments, with the main clubs in the country and regularly broadcast on TV. In the World Cup, the selection commanded by the Swedish Pia Sundhage is betting on a mixture of young and experienced players (such as Marta) to try for the unprecedented title. The team, which is not among the main favorites, will debut on Monday (24), at 8am, against Panama.
