The visit to Brazil of the Russian Chancellor, Serguei Lavrov, thickened the soup of criticism from the West to the diplomacy of the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). The United States and the European Union have been demonstrating a growing discomfort with Brazil’s posture in the face of major geopolitical disputes.

At the end of last week, on a trip to China and the United Arab Emirates, Lula made a series of declarations on the War in Ukraine and on relations with Beijing that were seen as an affront by the White House —an open rival of the Chinese.

The reception given to Lavrov, who this Monday (17th) was with Chancellor Mauro Vieira and with Lula himself, amplified the feeling that Brazil has aligned itself with Moscow – officially, the country maintains a position of neutrality for the conflict in Eastern Europe . US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby called Lula’s stance “deeply problematic” and a “repetition of Russian propaganda”.

At Itamaraty, without mentioning the war, Lavrov said that Brazil and Russia have similar approaches to contemporary issues; Vieira criticized sanctions imposed on Moscow and said he reiterated the request for a ceasefire in Ukraine, reinforcing the proposal of a “peace club”. He later countered Kirby’s criticisms.
