Federal deputies and senators elected in October take office this Wednesday (1st) and are already choosing the presidents of the two Houses of Congress for the next two years.

The election is one of the rites that mark a resumption of institutional normality in Brasilia after the coup attacks on January 8, when the Legislature was in recess.

Attention will be more focused on the Senate, where the candidacy of Rogério Marinho (PL-RN) threatens the re-election of Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), becoming a hope of power for Bolsonarism.

The former minister of Regional Development’s campaign gained traction in recent days, and the former president and his family reinforced their support for him. A PL dinner last Monday (30) was attended by former first lady Michelle, who made a video call to Bolsonaro – who is in the US.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) works for Pacheco to avoid what would be seen as a major defeat for the government, in a legislature in which the Planalto Palace does not have a clear majority to approve, for example, proposals to amend the Constitution .

In the Chamber, the result is taken for granted, after the candidacy of Arthur Lira (PP-AL) brought together parties from across the political spectrum – from Lula’s PT to Bolsonaro’s PL. The current president of the House has been sewing his re-election since last year and possible opponents should launch themselves more as a way to make a stand, like Chico Alencar (PSOL-RJ) and Marcel Van Hatten (Novo-RS).

In both Houses the vote is secret, which opens up room for betrayals.
