As part of the responses to the coup attacks on January 8 in Brasilia, the Ministry of Justice presented a package of legal actions and bills to the Planalto Palace in recent days to strengthen institutions and defend democracy.
The changes include the creation of a National Guard to act in the Federal District, protecting public buildings. The measure refers to an institution that already existed in Brazil, at the time of the Empire, and rivaled the Armed Forces.
In this Monday’s episode (6), Café da Manhã resumes the historical context of the National Guard in conversation with historian Heloisa Starling. The UFMG (Federal University of Minas Gerais) professor explains similarities that could exist between the corporation of the present and that of the past and analyzes what roles this new unit could have in an environment of coup d’état.
