The expectation surrounding the nomination of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) to the Federal Supreme Court is growing, at a time when the petista starts to give signals about what he plans to do with the vacancy that will be opened with the departure of the minister Ricardo Lewandowski — he will be 75 in May and will have to retire.
Last week, a group of jurists sent a manifesto to the Presidency of the Republic asking for the appointment of a black woman to the court. The idea gained support on the Esplanada, with public demonstrations by Anielle Franco, Minister of Racial Equality, and Silvio Almeida, of Human Rights. STF Minister Edson Fachin was also in favor of this choice.
But Lula has shown another path. In an interview with journalist Reinaldo Azevedo on BandNews FM radio, the president mentioned the possible choice of lawyer Cristiano Zanin, who defended him in the Lava Jato operation processes. “Everyone would understand that he deserved to be nominated. Technically he has grown in an extraordinary way, he is my friend, he is my companion, as others are my companions, but I never nominated him because of that,” declared the PT candidate.
This Monday’s Café da Manhã (13) explains the criteria for choosing a STF minister and discusses whether pressure from society may weigh on Lula’s decision. FGV law professor Eloísa Machado also analyzes how recent nominations reflect the relationship between presidents and appointed ministers.
