The government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) promised, already in the first days of his mandate, to recover the structures dedicated to the memory of the military dictatorship. During the administration of Jair Bolsonaro (PL), who always exalted the regime, they were distorted, as in the case of the Amnesty Commission, or extinguished, like the Commission on Dead and Disappeared.

In his inauguration speech, the Minister of Human Rights, Silvio Almeida, highlighted the mission, and in January the government recomposed the Amnesty Commission, removing military personnel appointed by the previous administration and appointing those persecuted by the regime and figures linked to the defense of memory.

In practice, the groups will need to face challenges such as the limited budget and a lean team for the volume of reviews of rejected requests in the Bolsonaro and Michel Temer (MDB) governments – the estimate is more than 4,000 judgments.

Work was placed as a priority. On March 30, in the first session of the Commission, four symbolic cases were analyzed and ended with the amnesty of Ivan Valente, José Pedro da Silva, Romário Schettino and Claudia de Arruda Campos.
