The Minister of Women, Cida Gonçalves, told the podcast Café da Manhã, from the Sheetthat in order to prevent violence against women, society needs to “have an attitude” and the State, “immediately respond” to the complaints.

“Violence cannot be just a women’s problem. It belongs to the government and society. We have cases in which women die from being beaten up so much. It’s not possible that any neighbor has heard. When there’s a scream, a cry , a tear, that’s where society needs to have an attitude. The State needs to give an immediate response. The State can’t arrive four hours later, right? By then the woman will already be dead “, said the minister.

According to the minister, despite being an international model, the Maria da Penha Law is not currently implemented in Brazil. “The challenge is to have services that are able to care for women. Most of them are concentrated in capitals or large cities and violence is coming from all municipalities.”

On this International Women’s Day, the government mobilized 19 ministries for a ceremony that will announce more than 20 actions aimed at women. The idea is to give political weight to the date. In the election, Lula benefited from the high rejection of former president Jair Bolsonaro by this part of society.

The previous government was marked by the weakening of policies for women. Data gathered by Sheet in 2022 showed that two-thirds of the actions that benefited them were cut in the 2023 Budget – in some cases, it represented 99% of what had been reserved in the previous year.

All forms of violence against women increased in Brazil in 2022, according to a Datafolha survey carried out at the request of the Brazilian Public Security Forum. The survey ranges from victims of name-calling and threats to those who have been stabbed or shot at.

It also details how the government intends to deal with the rise in violence against women and the difficulties in accessing legal abortion in Brazil.
