The final text of the Amazon Summit, which ends this Wednesday (9) in Belém, Pará, does not mention barring new oil exploration projects in the Amazon, citing only the idea of ​​starting a dialogue on the sustainability of the fossil fuels in the region. Named the Declaration of Belém, the document was released this Tuesday (8) after a closed-door meeting.

Oil was one of the points of dissent at the event. Colombian President Gustavo Petro said that “talking about transitions” is a type of denialism from the left — in reference to the term used by governments to justify investment in fossil fuels. At the opening of the Summit, President Lula (PT), who indicated support for studies for new oil exploration points in Foz do Amazonas, mentioned the ecological transition.

The petista said he wanted to change the “subaltern place of raw material supplier” in the Amazon. The summit is seen as a preview of the COP (UN Climate Conference) that Belém will host in 2025 and is part of the diplomatic strategy of the Brazilian president, who tries to be a protagonist in the environmental issue.

In the joint declaration, the countries of ACTO (Amazonian Cooperation Treaty Organization) also proposed to present themselves as a bloc in multilateral negotiations, which can strengthen claims to protect the forest.
