Players charge Fifa for prize in the Cup: “A quarter of men”

Even with the Women’s World Cup this year being the biggest in history, the differences with men’s football remain.

In a video published on the Australian Players Association social networks, the country’s players value the achievements of recent years, so that the sport improves, but they also question FIFA for paying only a quarter of the award given to men’s football to the women’s teams at the World Cup.

For this year’s World Cup, the Australian players will have the same payment that the Australian Football Confederation gave to the men’s team in the 2022 World Cup. Despite celebrating this feat, in the video published on Monday, the athletes do not hide their frustration that the highest football entity on the planet still has this difference between men and women.

“The negotiation allowed us to ensure that we now have the same conditions as the Australian men’s team, with one exception: FIFA still offers women a quarter of the prize money as men for the same achievement,” commented Tameka Yallop, midfielder for the team who will be in the World Cup.

FIFA to pay half a billion to women’s World Cup teams

According to the Sky Sports channel, Fifa will pay around BRL 529 million in prize money for the teams participating in this year’s World Cup. In the last edition of the men’s World Cup, won by Argentina, around R$ 1.8 billion was distributed among all participants.

For comparison purposes, the selection that becomes champion of the Women’s World Cup this year will pocket US$ 15.7 million, around R$ 75.3 million. The amount is practically a third of what Fifa granted to Argentina, world champion in the Men’s Cup, in Qatar, at the end of 2022: US$ 42 million (about R$ 201 million, at current exchange rates).

Playing at home in the World Cup, Australia is in the final stretch of preparation for the World Cup. Last week, in a friendly against France in Melbourne, the selection had the largest attendance in the country’s history in a women’s football game in history, with more than 50,600 people in the stadium. “As Matildas”, as the Australian women’s team is known, will face Ireland in the opening match of the World Cup next Thursday (20), at 7 am (Brasília time).
