Player who assaulted referee is convicted of attempted murder

The player William Cavalheiro Ribeiro was sentenced to two years and eight months of semi-open imprisonment by the Jury Court of the District of Venâncio Aires for the crime of attempted murder against referee Rodrigo Crivellaro, in a game between Guarani and São Paulo, for the access division of the Campeonato Gaúcho , on October 4, 2021. The defendant must also indemnify the victim for property damage of BRL 18,000 and will be able to appeal freely.
Referee Rodrigo Crivellaro was kicked in the head and passed out on the field, needing to be taken by ambulance to the nearest hospital. Crivellaro gave testimony to the court and said that he suffered an injury to the sixth vertebra. He had to step away from his activities and wear a neck brace for 60 days
“I could have stayed in a wheelchair”, he said, according to what he heard from the doctors who treated him. Currently, he has abandoned professional refereeing, after six years as a judge for the Gaúcha Football Federation, and now works as a paddle tennis teacher.
Player William Riberto denied, during interrogation, having tried to kill the referee. “I never meant to. Never. I really did, it was wrong, but it wasn’t attempted murder.” He is out of professional football after receiving a two-year suspension and has apologized to the victim for the assault. “I regret it a lot”.
