PL will not give up presiding over CCJ this year, say deputies – 01/26/2024 – Panel

Deputies from PL, the party of former president Jair Bolsonaro, say that the party will not give up commanding the CCJ (Constitution and Justice Commission) of the Chamber of Deputies this year.

It is the main committee of the House, since all projects that are being processed in the Chamber pass through it.

According to the House’s rules, commissions are distributed according to the size of the benches, with the largest parties having preference following the choice. Holder of the largest bench, the PL has the right to make the first choice.

In 2023, the party gave up to the PT to take command of the commission, after a dispute that involved the president of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL). The commission was chaired last year by federal deputy Rui Falcão (PT-SP).

Throughout 2023, PL parliamentarians took it for granted that the party would have the presidency of the commission and said that this had already been agreed in advance. In December, however, cardinals from the House stated that there is no agreement that guarantees this, which angered parliamentarians from the party.

Subject to reservations, they say that the first request is up to the PL and that it will be the CCJ. Deputies also state that there is no possibility of the party giving up on this and that there would already be a name to fill the position: deputy Caroline de Toni (PL-SC).
