PL, PP and Republicans officially support Rogério Marinho’s candidacy

The PP, Republicans and PL parties announced this Saturday (28) their support for the candidacy of Rogério Marinho (PL-RN) for Senate presidency. The official support took place at the headquarters of the PL, in Brasília.

The support bloc formed by the parties totals 21 senators as of the beginning of this legislature, on February 1st. Marinho will compete with Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), current President of the House, and Senator Eduardo Girão (Podemos-CE).

During the event, the president of the PP, Ciro Nogueira, stated that the bloc does not aim to be against anyone, but in favor of Brazil, and that the support of the parties strengthens Marinho. “Give support for your arrival [à presidência do Senado]with stature to try to bring harmony between powers”, he declared.

For the president of the Republicans, Marcos Pereira, the election to the presidency of the Senate is not a “third round” of the presidential elections and that the bloc “is a meeting in favor of Brazil”. “This union that is being consolidated today between the PL, the PP and the Republicans is not a third round, as some have said, because the election for president and for governors is over.”

In addition to Marinho and the president of the party, Valdemar Costa Neto, the elected senator and leader of the PP, Tereza Cristina, the former minister Damares Alves, senator elected by the DF, among other parliamentarians as senators of the PL for Rio de Janeiro Flávio Bolsonaro and Carlos Portinho.

“Democratic Imbalance”

When making his candidacy for the Senate official, alongside supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro, Marinho criticized the “excesses” that are being committed by the current government in the economic area and by the Brazilian judiciary against individual freedoms.

According to Marinho, the Lula government, in imposing its economic agenda, “wants to destroy what has been virtuously done in favor of Brazil, such as labor reform, social security reform, Central Bank autonomy”.

The candidate also criticized what he called “democratic imbalance”, in reference to the decisions of Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF). According to Marinho, “no one can be above the law” and there must be respect for individual freedoms. He also stated that he is not proposing a “confrontation”, only an institutional dialogue. “We cannot accept prior censorship, as it is a value that was hard won in the redemocratization of this country and is expressly prohibited by the Constitution,” he said.

“It is in parliament where common consents can and should be changed and not elsewhere. (…) We are in this cause of reestablishing the individual guarantees of Brazilian society. The Senate cannot and should not omit itself”, declared Marinho.
