Project proposes to guarantee the region’s development in the coming years, through bioeconomy and biobusiness

Manaus (AM) — The pilot project was launched on Wednesday (24) and aims to explore the potential of curauá for the industrial sector, with the planting of 12,500 curauá seedlings in the Novo Remanso region, in Itacoatiara (176 kilometers away). of Manaus). The action was carried out by the Government of Amazonas in partnership with the Amazon Biotechnology Center (CBA) and a company in the thermoplastic sector of the Manaus Industrial Pole (PIM), and was attended by Suframa’s Executive Deputy Superintendent, Luiz Frederico Aguiar, and the Municipality’s project manager, Ozenas Maciel.

Curauá is an Amazonian bromeliad (similar to pineapple) whose fibers have several applications and can partially replace fiberglass. It has the potential to be used in the textile, agricultural, automobile, civil construction, telecommunications, computing, among others.

The launch of the pilot project — which represents the materialization of one of Suframa’s main objectives, which is to guarantee the development of the region in the coming years, through bioeconomy and biobusiness — took place in the Santo Antônio de Caxinauá Community, in the District of Novo Remanso .

“It is a place well known for planting bromeliaceae, which is the Novo Remanso pineapple. As the curauá is from the same family, there is already suitable soil for it”,

explained the deputy superintendent of Suframa.

The project’s proposal, according to information from the Government of Amazonas, is to promote the sustainable use of the region’s natural resources and also diversify the regional economic matrix, generating employment and income for local producers.

For Aguiar, the initiative is important since there are currently not enough plantations to meet the manufacturing needs for the extraction of curauá fibers.

“We are talking about a bioeconomy project, because it uses input from the Amazon in a productive-industrial process, in the specific case of thermoplastics, which has the potential to make the use of fiber economically viable”,

highlighted.

Representatives of the State Secretariat for Economic Development, Science, Technology and Innovation (Sedecti) participated in the event; State Secretariat for Rural Production (Sepror); State Secretariat for Science, Technology and Innovation (Secti); Amazon Biotechnology Center (CBA); Institute for Sustainable Agricultural and Forestry Development of the State of Amazonas (Idam) and members of the private sector.
