Of the 1,100 men involved in the studies, 600 performed aerobic exercise (30 to 60 minutes per training session, 3 to 5 times a week), while 500 did not receive any type of physical training, serving as controls.

In three studies, participants also did weight training in addition to aerobic exercise. Erectile function was assessed using a scale whose score ranges from 6 to 30, with lower values ​​indicating worse performance.

Statistical analyzes revealed that physical exercise improved, on average, 2.8 points on the erectile dysfunction scale. And here is the most significant finding: men with the most severe dysfunction were those who presented the best responses, with a significant increase of 4.9 points on the aforementioned scale.

To give the dear reader an idea of ​​the potency (oops!) of this finding, let us consider that testosterone replacement usually adds 2 points to this erectile dysfunction scale. Phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors – a class of medications whose most famous representatives are Cialis (tadalafil), Levitra (vardenafil) and Viagra itself (sildenafil) – provide gains of 4 to 8 points. Thanks to the size of its effect, exercise could well form part of the therapeutic arsenal against sexual impotence. But how does he act?

Regular exercise prevents hypertension, obesity and diabetes – conditions that greatly increase the risk of erectile dysfunction. It also improves the function of the vessels, producing dilating substances, such as nitric oxide, which facilitate erection.

And as erectile dysfunction can portend more serious cardiovascular conditions (atherosclerosis, for example), prescribing exercise can be quite convenient, with an expanded therapeutic focus on the patient’s general health.

Supported by recent evidence that shows that regular exercise comes close in effectiveness to more “pop” medications in combating erectile dysfunction, we could say – to the delight of those who have come to the test – that exercise is a behavioral blueprint.
