Pictures by photographer Sebastião Salgado that were returned to the artist during the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) will return to Funai (National Foundation of Indigenous Peoples).
The episode took place in 2020. At the time, the then president of the foundation, Marcelo Xavier, decided to return 15 photographs of the artist in response to Salgado’s criticism of the Bolsonaro administration’s indigenist policy during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The works were spread across rooms at Funai’s headquarters, in Brasília, and were removed.
After the return, the Federal Public Ministry was responsible for keeping the photos. Valued at almost BRL 1 million, the collection is the result of work carried out by Sebastião Salgado, in partnership with Funai, with the Korubo indigenous people of Vale do Javari (AM), in 2017.
“We owe this reparation to the indigenous peoples, to Sebastião Salgado and to the Brazilian State, bearing in mind that the works had been donated to Funai in the past and are, therefore, part of the public heritage”, says the current president of Funai, Joenia Wapichana, in note sent to the column.
The idea is that the cadres become part of the foundation’s assets again during the celebrations of the so-called Indigenous April, organized by the foundation, which provides for a series of actions in favor of indigenous peoples.
“This is one of so many unreasonable and regrettable decisions taken in the last four years and that are being reviewed by Funai”, continues Joenia.
