PF vetoes Bolsonaro in airport lobby, and escort will be without wave to supporters – 03/29/2023 – Politics

The Federal Police, in agreement with leaders of the Liberal Party, decided that former president Jair Bolsonaro would not leave through the traditional lobby of Brasília International Airport when returning to Brazil, this Thursday (30).

The decision, according to the PF superintendent in the Federal District, Cezar de Souza, was taken to avoid agglomeration of people at the airport and a possible impact on the boarding and disembarking of passengers.

“[Bolsonaro] You will not exit through the normal lobby. This would harm society. Both the party and other people are aware of this and, with common sense, accepted this position of the PF”, said Souza.

“[A decisão] It comes with the force of law. We have legal prerogatives, like the Judiciary Police. It is not an illegal, authoritarian act, but it is provided for in the legislation,” he added.

The main fear of the DF Public Security authorities is the impact that a possible crowding at the airport could have on the air network across the country.

According to Inframérica, which manages the terminal, 137 take-off and landing operations are planned from early morning to 10 am.

According to the DF Security Secretary, Sandro Avelar, the Military Police will escort the former president from the airport to the headquarters of the PL, in the central area of ​​Brasília. There, Bolsonaro is expected to meet with party leaders and parliamentarians.

“We are going to guarantee the ex-president’s safety during the trip, but doing the escort in the security model and not in that model of escorting dignitaries, which allows for greater flexibility”, he said.

Avelar explains that, in this school model, the former president will not be allowed to get out of the car on the road or disrupt traffic to wave to supporters. “This cannot happen. We have to work with the least possible damage to the progress of our city”, he added.

The superintendent of the PRF (Federal Highway Police) in the DF, Igor Ramos, said that the corporation has been monitoring the mobilization of Bolsonaro supporters to travel to Brasília, by bus, to accompany the return of the former president. He did not say, however, the size of the monitored caravans.

In the wake of the attacks on the headquarters of the Powers on January 8, the plan closed by the security forces foresees a possible closure of the Esplanada dos Ministérios, starting at midnight on Thursday, depending on the movement in the place. The expectation of the authorities, however, is not to change the flow in the place.

Similar monitoring will be carried out in the vicinity of Brasília Airport. Access to the site may be restricted if crowds of people form in the lobby or if there is movement of motorcyclists, to re-enact the motorcycles carried out by the former president.

“What we are looking for is, mainly, to preserve the normal routine of the International Airport of Brasília. It is the second largest in Brazil in terms of people movement. In all, 40 thousand people travel there per day. I am talking about passengers, family members, crew. It is a very sensitive installation. Any problem we have there interferes with the entire Brazilian air network”, explained Cezar de Souza, from the PF.
