PF takes action against invaders in Karipuna Indigenous Land – 05/11/2023 – Daily life

The Federal Police, Ibama and Funai (National Foundation of Indigenous Peoples) began this Thursday (11) an operation in the Karipuna Indigenous Land, in Rondônia, to remove invaders involved in deforestation and illegal logging.

This morning’s action focused on the 12 biggest alert points within the indigenous land, and 20 loggers were targeted for defrauding credit issues in the Forest Origin Document System, says the PF.

According to the police, the scheme is used to “warm up” the origin of forest products that are sold illegally, that is, to give the appearance of legality through oranges and fraudulent management plans.

The purpose of the operation is to identify people involved in land-grabbing and illegal logging activities and to destroy machinery and bridges used by criminals to access the Karipuna Indigenous Land.

Those responsible for the equipment will be taken to the PF headquarters in Rondônia. According to the corporation, the region has been monitored since the beginning of the year.

The Federal Police assigned 80 agents to the action, and 10 civil servants from Ibama, which provided a helicopter, and one from Funai also participated.

According to leadership Adriano Karipuna, the crimes, which also involve predatory fishing, have been reported since 2017.

“We know that it is very difficult to restore forests that have been destroyed. I have already made a statement at the UN in New York and Geneva, and I made this denouncement of deforestation in the Vatican, during the Amazon Synod.”

Adriano says that there are isolated indigenous people in the indigenous land, which has 153,000 hectares, and that predatory fishing on the Jaci-Paraná River is yet another threat to this group.

Pressured by land grabbers and loggers, the Karipuna are finding it difficult to rebuild their population after being almost exterminated. Today, there are less than a hundred people living in the territory.
