The Federal Police opened an investigation this Wednesday (25) to investigate the alleged practice of genocide and environmental crimes caused by illegal mining in the region of the Yanomami people, in Roraima, according to information from the GloboNews. The action comes after a determination by the Minister of Justice and Public Security, Flávio Dino (PSB), who on Monday (23) sent a letter with the request to the director general of the PF, Andrei Rodrigues. The investigation will be conducted by the superintendence of Roraima.
“President Lula determined that the laws be complied with throughout the country. And let’s do this in relation to the criminal suffering imposed on the Yanomami. There are strong indications of the crime of genocide, which will be investigated by the PF”, said Dino last Saturday (21), when he visited the region with a delegation from the federal government that traveled to the place to verify the situation of the indigenous people and decreed a state of emergency.
According to the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples, 99 children of the Yanomami people died due to the advance of illegal mining in the region. The data refer to 2022 and the victims were children between one and four years old. The causes of death are mostly malnutrition, pneumonia and diarrhea. The folder also estimates that at least 570 children were killed in the last four years by mercury contamination, malnutrition and hunger in the region.
PT deputies call for investigation against Bolsonaro
On Sunday (22) PT deputies triggered the Federal Public Ministry (MPF) with a request for an investigation against former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and former minister Damares Alves (Republicanos-DF), who commanded the Ministry of Women, Family and Human Rights, for allegedly committing the crime of genocide against Yanomami indigenous people.
A report by People’s Gazette shows that since 1991 the chaotic situation of the Yanomami has been documented by the Instituto Socioambiental (ISA). Former members of Funai and Sesai attribute the fact that they have not been able to resolve the humanitarian crisis situation, which has existed for decades – including in previous governments of current President Lula (PT) – to the difficulties of access to go to the villages, the circumstances of these specific tribes and also by the arrival of other Yanomami from Venezuela.
