Petrobras obtains license and must carry out a simulation for oil exploration on the Equatorial Margin from Amapá – News of Brazil

A Petrobras confirmed that it received the license from the Secretariat for the Environment and Sustainability of Pará that was missing to carry out, soon, the simulation that could start oil exploration in the so-called Brazilian Equatorial Margin, which extends from the coast of the state of Amapá to the Large northern river. The investments foreseen by the state-owned company in this project are around US$ 2.9 billion. According to the company, from now on, will be defined “some points” with the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) for work to begin. “The date for carrying out the Pre-Operational Assessment (APO) will be defined soon, together with IBAMA”summarized the company.
Semas do Pará also confirmed, in a note, that it issued the operating license for the Fauna Recovery and Depetrolization Center (CRD), built in Icoaraci, and which will “monitor space”. This Center will be used to care for animals that may be affected in the event of an accident during the drilling of the so-called Well Morpho, located about 175 kilometers off the coast of Amapá and at a depth of 2,880 meters. This is the first well that should be explored by Petrobras in the region, if the simulation indicates that it is possible to commercially use the oil found there – if the existence of the mineral in the well is attested.
“To give you an idea, out of every ten wells drilled in the world, nine, in general, are identified as sub-commercial, that is, they cannot be exploited commercially. In others, oil is not even found. Often, only water or CO2 (carbon dioxide) is found. In any case, it is widely believed that oil exploration on the so-called Equatorial Margin will be possible, not least because other wells have already been found in the region, in areas belonging to Guyana, for example, which has grown a lot thanks to this activity”ponders the resident of the Brazilian Institute of Oil and Gas (IBP), Roberto Ardenghy.
Second Ardenghy, The oil exploration project on the Equatorial Margin is of fundamental importance for Brazil, as the main basins in the country today – Campos, in Rio de Janeiro, and Santos, in São Paulo – are already “mature”, which means that the natural tendency is for their productivity to fall. “It is fundamental, now, to seek the replacement of oil reserves and the perspective for the Equatorial Margin is very positive, since these basins are very close to sites where oil has already been confirmed”details.
For the president of IBP, All the environmental concern around the simulation to be carried out by Petrobras is valid, but, according to him, Brazil is a country that performs this type of operation with proven safety for a long time. “Brazil produces, daily, about three million barrels of oil and there are no frequent accidents, so we can say that it is a safe activity”scores.
Petrobras’ initial forecast was to carry out the simulation in December of last year, but the lack of a license – now issued by Semas do Pará – made the process unfeasible. This authorization was necessary because, even if the well to be drilled is located in another state, in this case, Amapá, Pará hosts the Rehabilitation Center and will also contribute to the logistics of the operation.
