Peru will declare a health emergency in 20 of its 25 regions for 90 days due to a dengue outbreak, the president of the Council of Ministers, Alberto Otárola, announced this Monday (26).

According to the Peruvian Ministry of Health, 31,364 cases and 32 deaths were reported between January and February, compared to 12,264 cases and 18 deaths in the same period in 2023.

The state of health emergency allows authorities to make a larger budget available to combat the disease, among other measures.

The Peruvian Minister of Health, César Vásquez, highlighted in a press conference that the situation is not as serious in Peru as in other countries in the region. “We are not the country with the highest mortality rate. Countries like Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay are in a more complex situation.”

According to the Peruvian government, the high temperatures caused by the El Niño climate phenomenon cause the larvae of the mosquito that causes dengue fever to reproduce in greater numbers.

In 2023, Peru had the worst record of dengue victims in four decades, when the disease killed 445 people and infected more than 270,000.
