Pedagogical project uses African fabrics in teaching Mathematics and History

Based on History, Culture and Mathematics, a project developed by students at the Gilberto Mestrinho Full-Time Education Center (Ceti), located in the south of Manaus, analyzes “Geometry in African fabrics”. The activity involves students in the 9th year of Elementary School, from the teaching unit.
The project is part of the Science at School Program (PCE), developed by the Amazonas State Research Support Foundation (Fapeam), in partnership with the State Department of Education and School Sports.
The activity is coordinated by professor Nalva Cristina dos Reis. According to the creator, the proposal recognizes the importance of integrating Afro-Brazilian culture into Mathematics with the purpose of combating racism.
“In addition to students developing a deeper understanding between Mathematics and Afro-Brazilian culture, at the same time they are encouraged to question racial stereotypes and prejudices, in which students learn not only to solve geometric problems, but also to value cultural diversity ”,
explained the teacher.
For the student, Valentina de Souza, aged 15, the connection between Mathematics and Afro-Brazilian culture makes teaching more enjoyable and attractive.
“In the Mathematics part, we learned the symmetry that is used in fabrics in different figures and images that carry various meanings. In History and Culture, we learn a lot about the meaning of colors and the meaning of the fabric itself and what each part of Africa represents through them, which makes the classes interesting”,
said the student.
