In this type of agriculture, the açaí plantation mixes with the native forest and, often, some unforeseen events can happen, such as coming across bee hives or wasps. With this, the fruit does not spoil when it comes into contact with the soil. “In five days, an açaí picker can earn R$ 1,000. He can live, buy things for the house, there are people who can buy land and a house, all because of the açaí”, says a peconheiro interviewed by Globo Repórter. At Geisa Maria Cardoso’s plantation, the only option is still to carry out the drainage using wagons. Despite the difficulties, the rural producer is proud to generate income for families in the region. “I’m happy. I generate jobs for 15 families. They help me and I help them”, she says.
