One of the region’s main products is açaí, but harvesting it is a challenge that requires the fundamental participation of a professional: the peconheiro. It gets that name because it climbs trees with the help of peconha, a footrest. In this type of agriculture, the açaí plantation mixes with the native forest and, often, some unforeseen events can happen, such as coming across bee hives or wasps. TV Globo/Reproduction With specialized technical assistance, the peconheiros started to modernize their work and use techniques that reduce losses, such as the use of tarpaulins to thresh the seeds. With this, the fruit does not spoil when it comes into contact with the soil. “In five days, an açaí picker can earn R$ 1,000. He can live, buy things for the house, there are people who can buy land and a house, all because of the açaí”, says a peconheiro interviewed by Globo Repórter. At Geisa Maria Cardoso’s plantation, the only option is still to carry out the drainage using wagons. Despite the difficulties, the rural producer is proud to generate income for families in the region. “I’m happy. I generate jobs for 15 families. They help me and I help them”, she says.
