Paulo de Tarso Sanseverino, of the STJ and TSE, dies at 63 – 08/04/2023 – Politics

Minister Paulo de Tarso Sanseverino, of the STJ (Superior Court of Justice), died of cancer this Saturday (8), at the age of 63, in Porto Alegre. He was admitted to a hospital in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul.

The minister was part of the STJ since 2010, appointed by President Lula (PT), in the last year of his second term. Sanseverino was also a deputy minister of the TSE (Superior Electoral Court) since September 2021 and helped in last year’s elections.

Minister Alexandre de Moraes, president of the TSE, lamented the death in a note. “Brazilian Justice is witness to the competence and grandeur of our colleague Paulo de Tarso Sanseverino,” he said.

“The dear colleague, who for more than 12 years served brilliantly in the Superior Court of Justice, shared with us many of his virtues, such as rectitude, empathy and extreme zeal for the country”, wrote Moraes.

The president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), also spoke through a post on his Twitter profile. “A brilliant magistrate, Sanseverino, an excellent scholar of the legal framework, left a legacy that greatly qualified the court’s jurisdictional provision”, he wrote.

With that, Lula will nominate a total of six ministers for the STJ in this third term. Two magistrates have recently retired and two more are expected to retire by 2026.

Born in Porto Alegre in 1959, Sanseverino had been a magistrate since 1986 and had a doctorate in civil law from UFGRS (Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul). He was appointed to the STJ by Lula in 2010, where he was part of the 2nd Section and 3rd Panel.

In addition to the TSE, it was also part of the Decision-Making Group of the Intelligence Center of the Judiciary of the National Council of Justice and the Superior Council of Enfam (National School for Training and Improvement of Magistrates).
