Paulo Caruso: the privilege of sharing the same piano – 03/04/2023 – Frederico Vasconcelos

At the end of each program “Living Wheel“, from TV Cultura, the generous Paulo Caruso offered the interviewees and interviewers with a caricature. They were traits that he scribbled in minutes and that we would keep forever.

I worked with Paulo Caruso in the 1970s. Once, when I met the cartoonist again at Congonhas airport, I hesitated to greet him: I didn’t know if that was Paulo or his twin brother, Chico, also a cartoonist and musician that I had met before him.

The drawing that illustrates this post is from July 1990. It was with this portrait that I discovered the lack of hair on the front of the head… He kept the art for me, I went to get it at his house, when I heard the talented artist for the first time pianist.

I was jealous of the sound he got out of the instrument, the chords he created. We had similar repertoires and preferences.

Years later, Paulo Caruso invited me to participate in the program “Double dose talents“, which he organized at Teatro Sesc Anchieta. They were shows that showed “the other side of well-known professionals in the Brazilian media” (as promised in the official brochure).

He opened the program, on the piano, with Adriano Brusco (drums), Voluzi Vidal (vocals) and Fernando Barros (bass).

On my night, I played the piano with the excellent musicians Pedro Macedo (bass) and Giba Alves (drums). I had the right to receive guests in the dressing room, with fruits and drinks, an unforgettable experience.

I regret not having accepted all of Paulo Caruso’s invitations to give a piece of cake in the places where he played in São Paulo nightlife.

This Saturday, we lost the maestro of “Muda Brasil Tancredo Jazz Band“, a great human figure, an artist, he yes, with several facets.

The refined humor of Chico and Paulo Caruso, in the drawing and in the political satire, helped us to overcome the long period of darkness.

In every way, they were true double talent.
