Party leaders prepare names to nominate to the CPMI on January 8

The Joint Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPMI) to investigate the acts of vandalism on January 8 will only be installed next week, but party leaders are already looking for consensus names to occupy their vacancies. The collegiate will have a total of 20 to 30 titular members, with 10 to 15 deputies and 10 to 15 senators.

The PL, the main opposition party and which has the largest benches in both the Chamber and the Senate, will have the right to three vacancies for deputies. Among those indicated is the author of the application for the creation of the CPMI, Deputy André Fernandes (EC). The expectation is that the tradition will be maintained and the condition of proposer will guarantee him one of the three main positions in the commission: president, vice-president and rapporteur. In any case, there will be a dispute between government supporters and oppositionists for the functions. Another indication should be the former general director of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin), deputy Alexandre Ramalho (RJ).

In the Senate, the PL is currently considering the names of Magno Malta (ES), who has already been rehearsing critical speeches against the government’s actions in the episode at Praça dos Três Poderes, and the leader of the opposition, Rogério Marinho (RN).

The PT, the party of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and the largest in the government base, is also stepping forward to offer its names to compose the commission. Among the most quoted at the moment are deputies who are more experienced in CPIs, such as deputies Lindbergh Farias (RJ) and Carlos Zaratini (SP).

Talks should move forward in the next few days, so as to leave the composition ready to be confirmed by the president of Congress, Senator Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), who will request suggestions for the names of the leaders.

The expectation is that the request for opening the CPMI will be read in the first session of Congress in the year, scheduled for next Wednesday (26). After reading, party leaders will be able to make their nominations to compose the collegiate. The CPMI will aim to investigate both responsibilities and omissions in acts of vandalism that occurred in the federal capital.
