Parliamentarians file Barroso’s impeachment request – 07/19/2023 – Power

A group of deputies and senators filed this Wednesday morning (19) in the Senate a request for the impeachment of STF (Supreme Federal Court) Minister Luís Roberto Barroso after his speech on Bolsonarism at a UNE (National Union of Students) event in last week.

On the last day 12, Barroso stated that “we defeated Bolsonarism”, which provoked reactions from deputies allied with former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), as well as the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG).

Senators Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) and Jorge Seif (PL-SC), in addition to deputies Carlos Jordy (PL-RJ) and Cabo Gilberto Silva (PL-PB), were in Congress this Wednesday to file the request.

According to them, at least 11 signatures of senators (out of a total of 81 in the House) and 70 of deputies (out of a total of 513) from ten parties were collected so far: PL, MDB, Novo, União Brasil, PSDB, PP , Podemos, Republicans, PSD and Patriot.

Seif justified that the number of signatories tends to increase, since it is difficult to mobilize congressmen during the parliamentary recess.

Leader of the opposition in the Chamber, Jordy said that Barroso’s statement at the UNE is “unfortunate” and “deathly wounds the impeachment law, the Constitution and democracy”.

“It is not among the attributions of a minister of the Supreme to defeat anyone, but to care for and guard the Constitution. If he wants to defeat someone, let it be at the ballot box, but let him be a candidate. It is this type of behavior that we can no longer tolerate”, he said. .

Flávio Bolsonaro, son of Jair Bolsonaro, said that during his father’s government he always worked to ease the relationship between the Executive and the STF, but that at this moment it was necessary to “draw a line between what is republican and what is democratic”. .

“With what legitimacy does Minister Barroso now assume the presidency of the Supreme Court? With what morals will he assume the presidency of the CNJ? To punish magistrates who, by chance, have made manifestations of a political and partisan nature as he did”, he said.

“The remedies that were used and continue to be used to supposedly defend democracy have broken into our democracy”, continued Flávio.

The parliamentarians also stated that they believe that Pacheco’s statement criticizing Barroso’s speech at the UNE contributes to the request not being shelved. Pacheco classified Barroso’s speech as unfortunate, inappropriate and inopportune.
