Parliamentarians demand measures for prisoners suspected of vandalism

A group of opposition parliamentarians to the Lula government visited, this Wednesday (15), the Penitentiary Complex of Papuda and the Women’s Penitentiary of the Federal District, known as “Colmeia”, both in Brasília, to verify the situation of the suspected arrested demonstrators. of participation in acts of vandalism to the buildings of the Three Powers, on January 8.

After the visit to the Papupa prison, a group of senators published a note reporting the precariousness and overcrowding of the prison unit, which would be reflecting on “the quality of supply of food to prisoners and health care, as verified on site”.

“Between January 8th and 12th, the penitentiary’s population increased from 1,000 to 1,600 as a result of arrests related to acts of attack on the headquarters of the Three Powers”, they state. According to the senators, “the Secretariat of Penitentiary Administration (Seape) of the Federal District reported having asked the Federal Supreme Court (STF) to transfer prisoners who live in other states, as only 30 would reside in the Federal Capital”.

A People’s Gazette contacted Seape to find out more about the reports and denunciations of the parliamentarians, but there has been no response yet.

On the last 11th, the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB) asked Minister Alexandre de Moraes to transfer the prisoners to their states of origin. The transfer request has not yet been met according to the parliamentarians’ report.

In view of the findings, the senators will request an audience with the president of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Rosa Weber, to “ensure the prisoners’ guarantees and the speed of due legal process”.

Meeting with President of the National OAB

After the visit to the prison, the leader of the Opposition in the Senate, Rogério Marinho (PL-RN), and the leader of the PP, Senator Tereza Cristina (PP-MS), participated in a meeting with the president of the Federal Council of the OAB, Beto Simonetti. On the occasion, the parliamentarians requested “the entity’s support for the speed in the fulfillment of due legal process, in the individualization of conducts and in the guarantee of the human rights of the prisoners, ensuring the transfer to the States of residence or the release to await the trial”.

Reports reinforce the urgency for the creation of the CMPI, say parliamentarians

In a video published on social networks this Wednesday (15), federal deputy Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG) and senator Cleitinho (Republicans-MG) reported on the situation of women detained in Colmeia, a female prison in the Federal District. The visit took place after parliamentarians received a series of complaints about the situation of prisoners.

In the video, Nikolas appeals to parliamentarians who have not yet signed the request of the Joint Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPMI) to investigate the acts of January 8. The request has already reached the minimum number of signatures in the Senate (27), but still needs to reach the total number of signatures from federal deputies (171). “There is no leftist who signed the CPMI of the acts of the 8th of January”, says Nikolas.

“I call on senators and deputies who did not sign the CPI on the 8th, to sign it. We really need to clarify what happened that day. we want to see if there was no illegality in the process or ‘tractoring’ for people to be detained”, said the deputy from Minas Gerais.

According to the parliamentarians, some detainees have not yet been able to speak with their relatives, others claim that they were not at the place at the time of the acts of vandalism, and there would also be older people with morbidities among the prisoners.

“We need to separate the wheat from the chaff and verify all the reports. We are going to make the judge, Dr. Leila, official, so that we can record and show the testimonies of these people to bring transfer” said Senator Cleitinho.

The Minas Gerais senator also informed that he will try to set up a meeting with Minister Alexandre de Moraes in order to clarify the arrests of people who claim not to have participated and who were not legally entitled to the procedural rite.
