Paralympic athletes from Amazonas are called up for international competition in Chile

Manaus (AM) – Paralympic athletes Maria de Fátima, Eduardo Soares and Lucas Santos were invited to compete in the Chile 2023 Invitational Competition, which will take place on August 3rd and 4th in Santiago, Chile. With the support of the Government of Amazonas, through the Amazonas Project at the 2024 Paris Olympics, the trio from Amazonas has achieved significant results in pursuit of the dreamed Olympic vacancy.
“This is an important moment for Amazonas, as we are showing the strength of Paralympic sport. This is a reflection of the dedication of the para-athletes and the work invested by Governor Wilson Lima, who gives these athletes support to participate in high-level competitions”,
commented the project coordinator and Olympic medalist, Sandro Viana.
The call for para-athletes came after qualifying in the last Brazilian Loterias Caixa de Weightlifting Championship, in São Paulo. Where the best classified in the ranking were selected to compose the Brazilian team that will represent the country in the World Championship, in Dubai, and in the international competition, in Chile.
In terms of preparation, Eduardo Dantas and Lucas Soares will compete in the up to 49 kg category and Maria de Fátima up to 67 kg. Gold medalist in the Brazilian Championship, Lucas emphasizes the emotion of having received the call to compete in the world championship.
“I am happy for this call, I will be representing Amazonas and Brazil in the most important weightlifting competition, this means that I am on the right path and with the support of the State Government I want to win more titles and be a reference for children and young people”,
said Lucas Soares, two-time Junior World Champion para-athlete.
Conquering her space in international weightlifting, Maria de Fátima, who has malformations in her lower limbs, emphasizes the importance of the dispute. “The competition will be fundamental for us to reach international indexes, in addition to winning a spot for the Parapan, which will be the path to the Olympic Games in Paris”, he commented.
About the event
The “Invitational Competition” championship is considered one of the most important events in the annual calendar of the modality. This year’s edition will be held in Santiago, Chile, and aims to qualify for the Parapan American Games that will take place from November 17th to 26th.
