Palmeiras debuts at Paulista with an away draw – 01/21/2024 – Sport

Champion of São Paulo in the last two editions of the tournament, Palmeiras debuted this year with a draw against Novorizontino, this Sunday (21), 1-1, in Novo Horizonte. The goals were scored by Raphael Veiga and Willian Farias.

Abel Ferreira’s team did not perform well as a whole and came under pressure from those from the interior, who almost moved up to Série A in the Brazilian Championship last year, especially in the first half.

Without being able to produce much, the white team saw their opponent threaten Weverton’s goal from the start. Wagninho, for example, had two chances. One at 16, when he completed a cross from the left, and one at 29, when, with a header, he threatened the goal after a free kick.

Novorizontino opened the scoring at 38. The team recovered the ball in the middle and Geovane shot from distance. Weverton rebounded and Neto Pessoa scored, but the goal was disallowed after consultation with the VAR, which saw a foul on Zé Rafael at the beginning of the play.

The tone remained at the beginning of the second half. Wagninho hit the post after just 2 minutes. Shortly afterwards, Chico forced Weverton to make a great save.

But the one who opened the scoring was Palmeiras, in the 16th minute. Marcos Rocha crossed from the right and Raphael Veiga headed hard to score.

Novorizontino felt the goal and, thus, Palmeiras tried to manage the match.

But the interior team had its performance rewarded practically in the last ball of the game. Jenison crossed from the left and Willian Farias, first time, shot low to equalize.

With the result, Palmeiras is second in Group B, with one point. Água Santa, leader, has three. Ponte Preta and Guarani are also in the key. Teams from the same group do not face each other in the Paulista competition formula. In the end, the two best placed teams from each group advance to the quarter-finals, where they will play against each other.

Novorizontino is in Group D, the same as São Paulo, which beat Santo André this Saturday (20) by 3-1. With one point, they are in third, behind the team from the capital and São Bernardo, who also won in the debut.

Abel Ferreira’s team returns to the field on Wednesday (24), at 9:35 pm, when they host Inter de Limeira at Allianz Parque. Novorizontino plays against Santo André, away from home, the following day, at 9pm.
