The Otavio Frias Filho Chair for Studies in Communication, Democracy and Diversity, created by the IEA (Institute of Advanced Studies) at USP in partnership with Sheetwill hold this Tuesday (11) a meeting on what can be understood as intelligence, to find out if there is artificial intelligence on the planet.
The event will be online, from 3 pm to 5 pm, and will feature the independent researcher Carlos Irineu da Costa, as an exhibitor, and the chair holder, Suzana Herculano-Houzel, as a debater.
Comments will be made by André Chaves de Melo Silva, academic coordinator of the Otavio Frias Filho Chair, and by Vinicius Mota, secretary of the Sheet.
Among the issues that the event intends to address is what makes us human and whether supposedly intelligent machines actually play a relevant role.
“Would they be another human toy, new ‘Homo Faber’ tools, or are we trying to transcend a stage and create new operators that can interact autonomously with the world?”, asks Costa in a text introducing the meeting.
The debate will be broadcast and no prior registration is required.
The chair was launched in February 2021, when the Sheet completed 100 years. The initiative honors journalist Otavio Frias Filho (1957-2018), who led the modernization project launched by the newspaper in 1984 and directed the newsroom until his death.
