Opposition will call for demonstration against abortion on October 12

The opposition in the Chamber of Deputies is calling on the population to return to the streets on October 12th in a demonstration against abortion. According to deputy Maurício Marcon (Podemos-RS), deputy leader of the Opposition, several benches in the Chamber are united around the issue, which returned to debate at the initiative of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) last week, when minister Rosa Weber voted in favor of decriminalizing abortion up to the 12th week of pregnancy.

Marcon said that, with this initiative and the vote already cast in the virtual environment by the president of the Court, “society needs to show that it is against this possibility, which violates the right to life.”

Also according to the deputy, “it is necessary to show the Federal Supreme Court that this is a topic within the competence of the Legislature” and that “the majority of the population is against the termination of pregnancy”.

The Allegation of Non-compliance with Fundamental Precepts (ADPF 442) was proposed to the Supreme Court by the Psol and was already the subject of a public hearing at the Court in 2018. Rosa Weber resumed the trial last week, in a virtual plenary session. However, Minister Luís Roberto Barroso, who assumes the presidency of the STF this Thursday (28), highlighted the need to interrupt the trial and call the discussion to the physical plenary of the Court.

There is still no forecast for the resumption of the discussion, according to the STF press office.

Front protests against abortion in the National Congress

In addition to the call for demonstrations, parliamentarians articulated the obstruction of the Congress agenda to draw attention to the importance of the Supreme Court not dealing with the issue of abortion.

The president of the Catholic Parliamentary Front, Eros Biondini (PL-MG), told the People’s Gazette that the bench is mobilized to prevent the decriminalization of abortion.

“We do not accept this procedure in any way. The CNBB has already taken a stance against it and society has also taken a stand, making a cry for this action not to be guided”, stated Biondini.
